The woman killed Tuesday after being hit by a truck at the Princeton Shopping Center was identified yesterday, and the truck driver is being charged with careless driving.
Li Xuejun, 75, was crossing the street after leaving the public library when Raven Garcon, 36, of Hazlet, struck her with the delivery truck he was driving, Township Police Lt. Robert Buchanan said.
Li had traveled from overseas to see her son, who lives in Princeton.
"It appeared that she was in the crosswalk [when the truck hit her]," Township Police Lt. Robert Buchanan said.
Township Police have since charged Garcon — who was making a delivery to a doctor's office in the shopping center — with careless driving.
Under New Jersey statute, careless driving involves driving "carelessly, or without due caution and circumspection, in a manner so as to endanger, or be likely to endanger, a person or property."
Township Police chose to charge Garcon with careless driving because it is "one of a few statues that can be written on private or quasi-public property" like the Princeton Shopping Center, Buchanan said.
He added that careless driving is essentially "the most that he could be charged with" because the crash was unintentional.
Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad responded to a call Monday at 9:30 a.m. and freed Li from under the truck, where she had been pinned, Township Police Capt. Peter Savalli said.
She was transported to the trauma center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Though she died that morning, it was not until yesterday that police were able to identify her and find her next of kin.
Li's death came on the heels of another vehicle-related accident Oct. 16, when two University students were struck by a car while crossing Washington Road near Fine Hall after their swim practice.
Both students are recovering from minor injuries.
