McCosh Health Center renovations, which administrators say will improve privacy, convenience and outpatient services, are scheduled to begin May 15 and be completed before the start of the fall semester.
The University is planning a $250,000 renovation to the health center, President Tilghman said at a USG Senate meeting Sunday.
The building and its various services have been in need of improvement for many years, said Janet Finnie, associate director of health services.
Plans for the renovation were developed from student feedback during an administrative review of University Health Services a few years ago.
Students expressed some dissatisfaction with certain aspects of McCosh's outpatient services, Finnie said. The renovation is designed to address these issues.
The changes to McCosh will allow for more examination rooms in the outpatient clinic to provide for more walk-in patients and reduce the need for appointments in advance.
"The renovation is designed to improve our ability to provide effective health services in our outpatient clinic," Finnie said.
The Sexuality Education, Counseling and Health services program will be moved from the third floor to the first floor, while the Counseling Center will be moved to the second and third floors.
These moves will allow outpatient clinicians from various services to collaborate more easily and frequently, Finnie said.
A new check-in area will also be created for outpatient services, including SECH. This area will have built-in, confidential check-in stations with dividers. The current system has temporary cubicles that are partially open to provide some privacy.
Expanded Health Promotion and Student Health Plan offices will be moved to the first floor to be more accessible to students. Also, a larger waiting area will be created in a central location to minimize waiting in the hallway.
Previous improvements in McCosh were limited by a moderate budget. Built in 1925, the building requires a full-scale renovation to provide the necessary health services for students.

The construction will be completed in three phases this summer and is scheduled to end August 15.
