University names Marsh as new associate provost

Jed Marsh, former associate dean of the graduate school at Northwestern University, has been named associate provost at Princeton, the University announced Friday.

Marsh will be in charge of special projects and institutional research on campus, Provost Amy Gutmann said. Planning for the upcoming 500-student increase will be one area he will control.

Gutmann said yesterday that she is excited to have Marsh on board.

"It is great for Princeton to be able to attract this kind of talent from outside, as well as to promote from within," she said.

The addition of Marsh to the Provost's Office is just part of a larger string of changes in the office of late.

Earlier this year, former Associate Provost Georgia Nugent was promoted by Gutmann to head the University's new McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning.

Other changes came from within the office, as Gutmann promoted Joann Mitchell to vice provost for administration, Allen Sinisgalli to vice provost for research and physical planning, Katherine Rohrer to vice provost of academic programs and Steven Gill to director of budget and associate provost for finance.

At Northwestern, where he had been associate dean of the graduate school since 1998, Marsh oversaw the renovation of school facilities on the Evanston, Ill. and Chicago campuses.

During his time there, he also developed student placement and satisfaction surveys that were later used as part of the school's financial aid program.

The multi-department visit program he planned and put into practice at Northwestern has been successful in recruiting high-quality applicants.

The provost has the responsibility of being the general deputy of the president of the University and the chief budgetary and academic officer, Gutmann said.

She said she is pleased to have the expertise Marsh will bring to the office's work to align academic needs and budgetary considerations.

"He brings a very high level of administrational and technical skills, knowledge about different universities and about how we could put in place the various programs we are considering over the next few years," she said.

Marsh received bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Before becoming associate dean of the graduate school, Marsh was assistant chair and lecturer in Northwestern's molecular and cellular biology department. He received a Ph.D. from that same department in 1991.

In describing her feelings about the employment of Marsh, Gutmann recalled a conversation she had with Northwestern President Harry Bienen in which he told her, "You are getting someone we would really like to keep."

Marsh assumed the associate provost duties on a part-time basis Friday and will begin working full time on April 1.
