Martin leaves Alumni Weekly position; magazine seeks editor

For the third time in three years, the Princeton Alumni Weekly is in search of a new editor-in-chief.

Jane Chapman Martin '89 served as editor-in-chief since Feb. 1, 2000, but decided she will step down after the July 2002 issue because of family concerns, according to PAW's website.

Martin earned her B.A. degree in English from the University and an M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1990. While on campus, she was sports editor of The Daily Princetonian.

Just before Martin's tenure, PAW decided to forgo its independence and transfer administrative responsibility for publication to the University's Alumni Council in an effort to take better advantage of the University's resources. Preserving editorial independence was one of her greatest struggles as editor-in-chief.

Martin lives in Basking Ridge, N.J. with her husband, James Martin '89 and two young children.

The job opening will be formally advertised in PAW in the April 10 issue, but the University has already advertised in other publications and online. They will be accepting resumes and applicant nominations until May 1.

Before Martin, Janice Harayda worked as editor-in-chief for only four PAW issues. She left her position in early November 1999.

After Harayda's resignation, the publication released a statement that said Harayda "is no longer serving . . . because of differences between her and the board regarding the management of the magazine."

PAW is published 17 times a year with a circulation of about 60,000. Despite its title, it is published biweekly during most of the school year, with monthly issues in September, January, May, June and July.

Martin was unavailable for comment.
