Tiger Food adds two new restaurants to attract more customers

Attributing a decline in business to increased competition this year, Tiger Food has decided to add two new restaurants to its list to attract more customers.

The student agency that delivers food from local restaurants to students' rooms announced Friday that Kalluri Corner and Sakura Express have joined the list of restaurants it services.

Kalluri, an Indian restaurant on Nassau Street, and Sakura, a Japanese restaurant on Witherspoon Street, doubled Tiger Food's offerings. The agency already delivered food from Karen's Chinese Restaurant and George's Roasters & Ribs.

Tiger Food managers said Olive's Deli and Bakery may join later this week.

David Madden '03, assistant manager of Tiger Food attributed the decrease in business to competition with the Frist Campus Center. Because of a contract between Frist and its pizza provider, Villa Pizza, Tiger Food can no longer deliver pizza, Madden said.

In the past, though students had limited options they used Tiger Food more frequently, Madden said.

While the Classes of 2000, 2001 and 2002 were more familiar with Tiger Food, most of the current classes are more dependent on Frist for late-night snacking.

On an average weeknight last year, Tiger Food received about 30 orders for Karen's and 20 for George's, said Jamie Coughlin '02, Tiger Food's manager. This year, however, orders have dropped to an average of 22 and 17, respectively.

Although Frist had already opened last year, Tiger Food was still "surviving off seniors and juniors who hadn't yet been taken over by Frist," Coughlin said.

In addition to expanding its restaurant base, Tiger Food will post more ads and provide additional specials and promotions such as free deliveries, sodas and samples, Madden said.

"This is exciting for us, not just because we'll increase business, but also because we'll increase our presence on campus," Madden said.

Saturday night, Tiger Food received 17 orders for Sakura and seven for Kalluri in a span of three hours.

While the additional restaurants are expected to boost business, Tiger Food does not expect to expand its staff because of the proximity of the restaurants.

Management at Kalluri expressed excitement about the new partnership. At Sakura, business is expected to remain unchanged, a manager said.
