Gail, Langsam in USG runoff

USG election results were released yesterday afternoon. Because no candidate for president garnered 50 percent of the vote, David Gail '03 and Nina Langsam '03 will face each other in a run-off election to be held this weekend.

Only one other executive committee position was contested.

"It's just a great feeling, to see . . . people trust you," Langsam said. She also expressed excitement over the upcoming run-off and gratitude for those who supported her.

Gail said he was optimistic about the run-off. "I think it's an indication that my platform struck a chord with the students," he said.

Both candidates will have 24 hours to campaign before the run-off, which begins Saturday at 12:01 a.m. and ends at midnight on Sunday. The voting will be held online, through the USG's website.

Gail, who said his most effective campaign method was "meeting students, which I really enjoyed," added that he plans to do more of the same Friday, focusing on freshmen he has yet to meet.

Similar tactics worked for Langsam, who said she campaigned in dining halls and study breaks and via e-mail. "It's going to be a long Friday," she joked.

In the other contested executive committee race, Barham Ray '03 defeated Allison Binns '03 for USG academics chair.

Other candidates for USG executive committee positions ran unopposed and all garnered the 10 percent of the vote necessary for victory under USG election rules.

The new USG vice president will be Sonya Mirbagheri '04. Zachary Surak '05 - who is also a Daily Princetonian Staff Writer - will assume the post of campus and community affairs chair and Dareious Nowrouzi '04 will take over as undergraduate life chair.

Mike Kimberly '03 was re-elected USG treasurer. His challenger, Michael Angelo '04, dropped out of the race prior to the elections. In a message posted on the USG website, Angelo, who currently serves as class treasurer, explained that his main reason for withdrawing was that if elected, he feared he would not be able to provide due attention to both positions.

The 2003 class senators are Andrew DeFilippis and Taylor Nichols. Pettus Randall and Brad Flora were elected Class of 2004 senators. The election for freshman class senator, easily the most hotly contested race, ended with Brooke Stoddard - also a 'Prince' staff writer - and Kyle Detwiler prevailing in a field of 13 candidates.
