University students are expected to mingle at the ballot box with other Borough residents in today's election. In addition to the gubernatorial and state positions on the ballot, one University student is running for a seat on the Princeton Borough Council, bringing some particular interest in the political process to campus.
Steven Abt '04 has been preparing for this day since last semester. "I offer a different voice than anyone else running for council," he said in a USG-sponsored candidate forum last month. At the forum Abt said that because University students make up 20 percent of the Borough's population, they should have a voice on the council.
Abt is running against incumbent Roger Martindell (D), Michael Carnevale II (R) and Joseph O'Neill (D). O'Neill has been completing the term of a council member who resigned several months ago.
Students registered in the Borough have all been assigned to vote at Trinity Church Parish House at 33 Mercer Street, said USG campus and community affairs chair Nina Langsam '03. Students must have registered last month in order to vote today.
"We felt like people might not be so motivated to vote," Langsam said. As a result, the USG is sponsoring two shuttles to the voting site — one leaving from the Dillon Gym parking lot and the other from the gate in front of the Frist Campus Center.
"We are making it as easy as possible," Langsam said. She added, speaking to students, "Protect your interests and exercise your right to vote."
Also on the ballot are Jim McGreevey (D) and Bret Schundler (R) in the New Jersey race for governor.
