Body found in nearby canal

A body was recovered from the Delaware and Raritan Canal yesterday, according to Princeton First Aid and Rescue Chief Greg Paulson.

A woman who was traveling down the towpath said she saw what she believed was a dead body and called authorities, according to Paulson.

"[Princeton First Aid and Rescue] responded," Paulson said. "We searched a section of the canal with two of our boats and found the body."

Princeton Township Police coordinated the investigation, ultimately passing control to Plainsboro Police after determining the body was found in that department's jurisdiction, Paulson said.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the body found was that of an area indigent man. Officials declined to comment on the victim's identity.

Princeton Township and Plainsboro Police were unavailable for comment last night.
