Yesterday, a man who turned a program that had not had a winning season in 10 years into a Division III power was named the new head coach of a team that finished 2-25 last year.
Richard Barron, who led the Tigers of the University of the South to a school record 20 wins in the 1999-2000 season, will take the helm as the head coach of the women's basketball team next season. He replaces Kevin Morris, who struggled to a .080 winning percentage with the Princeton Tigers last season as the interim head coach.
Barron compiled a 77-48 record in five years at the University of the South, notching a winning record in his first season with the once-struggling program. Last year, his Tigers won their first conference championship in school history and were ranked as high as No. 12 in Division III.
Princeton women's basketball fans could be in for a dramatic change of pace next year. The Tigers had employed the vaunted Princeton offense, but such a deliberate attack seems unlikely under Barron. Last year, the University of the South averaged 77.6 points per game, down from the year before, when it was the top scoring team in Division III. Princeton scored 51.0 points per game last season.
Before taking the job as the women's coach at the University of the South, Barron was an assistant for the school's men's team.
