Men's tennis picks up close wins over Brown, Yale

There is nothing more satisfying than the sweet feeling of victory.

Unless you are able to have that same feeling of success twice in a row.

And what is the only thing more satisfying than back-to-back victories? Of course, it would have to be earning four straight wins over quality opponents.

The men's tennis team has enjoyed these recent feelings of success by starting and maintaining a solid winning streak. With their most recent victories this past weekend over Brown and Yale, the Tigers have managed to solidly defeat their last four opponents.

Their string of domination began March 24, when the team beat Loyola-Marymount, 4-3. The Tigers' mastery continued on March 30, when the team trampled Temple to earn a 7-0 win. The Owls were simply overwhelmed at every level, with the Tigers earning every singles point and every doubles point.

The series against the Owls was also notable because it marked the return of senior John Portlock. Portlock — who has been hampered by an injury since early November — competed for the first time in a singles match in almost five months. Playing in the number three singles spot against Temple, Portlock did not exhibit any rust when he defeated Jensen Bascome, 6-3, 6-0.

This weekend the Tigers continued their winning ways when they traveled to Providence, R.I., Friday to compete against Brown. Princeton captured four of six singles matches to earn a 4-3 victory. Although the Tigers dropped all of their doubles matches, their authority in singles play sealed the close victory.

Against Yale in New Haven, Conn Saturday, Princeton once again stepped into the winners' circle. The Tigers fought their way through close competition, ending the contest with a 4-3 win. Junior Judson Williams and freshmen Tim Kofol and Daniel Friedman won their singles matches, and the teams of senior Kyle Kliegerman and Portlock and Williams and Kofol earned Princeton the deciding doubles point.
