Scholars wire USSR to support authors

A group of more than 100 professors from Princeton, Rutgers and the Institute for Advanced for Advanced Study signed a petition last week that was sent to Russian Premier Alexei Kosygin requesting revocation of the sentences given Soviet authors Andrei D. Sinyavsky and Yuli M. Daniel.

The two authors were given prison terms by a Russian court last week following their conviction for "political crimes" based on the publication of several controversial novels in the west.

A list of 40 names was included in a cablegram sent directly to the Russian Premier on Thursday night, and over 100 names were included in a letter mailed the next day.

According to Rutgers professor Sidney Ratner, who co-ordinate the petition, the signers hoped "to persuade the Soviet authorities that it is in the best interests of the Russian people and the world to be merciful to these writers."

Mr. Rather praised the participation of all converned with the petition and pointed out such examples of enthusiasm for it as the world-famous scientist who spent a great deal of time xeroxing the petition and spreading it among fellow professors.
