Green '01 receives Marshall Scholarship for study at the University of London

Seth Green '01 left the interview uncertain about his performance.

An applicant for the Marshall Scholarship, Green felt the opportunity was a perfect fit for his future plans, but he doubted his interviewer would see that match.

And so he prepared for the long and anxious wait before the final decision, not expecting to learn who would be awarded the scholarship for several weeks.

But the day after his interview Green found out he had won the prestigious scholarship. "I was kind of shocked when I heard," Green said. "I didn't think the interview went well, so I was really surprised when I found out."

However, economics professor Elizabeth Bogan, who wrote one of Green's recommendations for the scholarship application, said she believed he never had anything to worry about.

"I think it is marvelous and well-deserved," Bogan said. "He thinks about things deeply and sensitively. He is a student who wants [his studies] to be a part of him."

A politics major, Green is one of 40 recipients of this year's Marshall Scholarship, which was established in 1953 in Great Britain to thank the United States for its aid in World War II under the Marshall plan.

The scholarship — which honors students who show both leadership prowess and great academic achievement — will allow Green to live and study free of cost for two or three years at a British university of his choice.

Green said he applied for the fellowship because it provided just the opportunity he was seeking. "I really wanted to study in England," Green said.

Green added that he plans to attend the University of London to study economic development during his first year. For the rest of his time at the university, Green will study ways to improve the care of children with disabilities in developing countries, a program that is unique to the institution.

After completing his studies in London, Green said he plans to work for a non-governmental organization for one or two years. Ultimately, Green said he plans to enroll in law school and pursue a career in public policy.

Assistant Dean of the College Marcia Cantarella, who oversees University students' fellowship applications, shared Bogan's sentiments about Green.

"His winning came as no surprise," Cantarella said. "The Marshall looks for people who are brilliant and committed, and [Green] is clearly so focused on his mission. It really seemed like an absolute perfect fit. They saw what we saw."
