A sixth-year graduate student died Jan. 2 in his Plainsboro apartment from complications related to a flu-like illness, University officials said last night.
Cheng Liao was a 27-year-old graduate student who was finishing his Ph.D. program in the computer science department, according to professor Doug Clark, his adviser. Liao also received a master's degree from the University in 1997.
Director of Communications Lauren Robinson-Brown '85 said last night that she could not comment in detail about Liao's death until Plainsboro Police completes its investigation into the incident.
Liao's work as a University graduate student focused on computer architecture and machine organization, particularly high-performance multiprocessor systems and networks.
While completing his dissertation, Liao worked for FirstRain, a technology startup company that investigates infrastructure software for the Internet of the future.
He previously was a teaching assistant at the University for COS 461 in 1995, COS 126 in 1996 and COS 471 in 1997.
He received a bachelor of science degree at Tsinghua University in China and received many awards and prizes in mathematics, chemistry, computer science and physics for his work in China. Liao was the top-ranked computer science student in his class at Tsinghua.
His papers were published at five international computer science conferences in France, the United States and Australia.
Born in Chengdu, China, Liao moved to the United States five years ago for graduate school at Princeton.
The University will hold a memorial service tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University Chapel.
