News & Notes: Colleges may continue to pay international recruiters on commission, but under new guidelines

The National Association for College Admission Counseling approved a new set of guidelines under which U.S. colleges may pay recruiters of international students, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on Saturday.

The announcement marks a stark departure from the association's previous position on the question. Earlier this year, a commission established by NACAC recommended banning commission pay for foreign recruitment entirely.

The guidelines, which are in place for institutions worldwide, state that colleges may not offer commission pay for recruiters of U.S. students.

The guidelines will take effect after one year. Meanwhile, NACAC is considering another amendment that would set guidelines for how foreign institutions pay their agents who recruit U.S. students.
