Around the Ivies: Women's Basketball - Princeton still number 1 heading into final weeks

As the Ivy League women’s basketball season draws closer to its conclusion, much still remains to be decided for the Ancient Eight. Princeton remains firmly entrenched in the top five of the league, looking to clinch a spot in the top 4 this weekend. Elsewhere, teams jockey for tournament seeding as three teams currently sit tied for two spots. Finally, the league’s bottom teams look to use these last few weeks to make some noise and end their season on a positive note albeit with some upsets.

Women’s hoops dominates Ivy bottom feeders, inches closer to Tournament berth

The Tigers — leaders of the Ivy League — took care of business this weekend with consecutive road victories at Cornell and Columbia, the league’s current seventh and eighth place teams. 

Basketball teams face weekend road trips as Ivy Tournament draws nearer

This weekend, Princeton basketball will be racking up miles, with the men’s and women’s teams going on the road together. The men’s team will be going to Cornell and Columbia on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. The women will also be playing against the Big Red and the Lions on Friday and Saturday night respectively. This weekend will be pivotal for both teams as they make their final pushes for the Ivy League standings.

Women’s Basketball beats Penn, takes Ivy League lead

In a matchup between two teams tied atop the Ivy League standings, the women’s basketball team made a strong statement Tuesday night with a 60–40 win against Penn in front of a home crowd at Jadwin Gymnasium. The Tigers dominated on both ends of the court throughout, taking an early lead and never allowing Penn back into the game. With the win, Princeton moves into sole control of first place in the Ivy League.

Women’s basketball propels to top of Ivy League with weekend sweep of Harvard, Dartmouth

“It’s a big three games coming up for us,” Head Coach Courtney Banghart said on Wednesday regarding the Harvard, Dartmouth and Penn games. “It is very helpful that all of those games are home,” she added. “It’s where you practice everyday, and it’s where you establish your routine . . . We draw the most [home fans] in the league and we know there will be a lot of people there.”

Basketball to enter Ivy League doubleheader against Harvard and Dartmouth

This weekend will be a busy one for Princeton basketball. The men’s team (11–10, 3–3 Ivy) will be going on the road to Harvard (10–11, 5–1) and Dartmouth (4–15, 0–6) on Friday and Saturday night respectively. The women (14–4, 4–1 Ivy) are at home playing against the Crimson (13–6, 5–1) and the Big Green (12–7, 4–2) on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Both teams are getting into the heart of their season and will reach or pass the halfway point of their seasons by the end of this weekend.

Men’s and women’s basketball sweep weekend doubleheader against Columbia and Cornell

This past weekend was a great one for Princeton men’s and women’s basketball. Both teams went undefeated in their opening Ivy League weekend at home in Jadwin Gymnasium against Columbia on Friday and Cornell on Saturday.

Women’s hoops closes 2017 with dominating performance vs. UMBC

The women’s basketball team closed out 2017 in style with a dominating performance over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers at Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday. The Tigers (10-3) earned the impressive 77-40 victory to close out the year with a four-game win streak and wins in seven of their last eight games.

Princeton downs Penn in Ivy League opener to win 5th straight

The Tigers (11–3) defeated the Quakers by a score of 70–55. With the win, the Tigers earned their sixth victory in a row and won against UPenn for the first time in their last six attempts. In this rematch between the teams that finished first and second, UPenn and Princeton respectively, the Tigers rewrote the narrative that everyone was expecting; defeating the Quakers at the Palestra will be considered a big upset by many people in the coming days, who predicted UPenn as the runaway Ivy League favorite.

At 5–2 and 2–6 respectively, the women’s and men’s basketball teams have started the year very differently. Yet this isn’t very surprising, nor should it be reason for panic, when looking back on last year.

Tigers outlast tough Leopard defense in win over Lafayette

The women’s basketball team (5-2) came into last night at Lafayette (3-5) looking to pick up back-to-back wins after a win on Saturday at home over Delaware. The two teams had met early last season and Princeton came away with the win (65-27,) a goal the Tigers were looking to repeat. On Wednesday night, the Tigers were victorious 53-45.

Women's basketball cruises past Delaware with 78–60 win

After a close loss to No. 24 Villanova, the women’s basketball team came into their match against Delaware hungry for a win. A career-high performance from senior guard Tia Weledji would give them just that as the Tigers cruised to a 78-60 victory over the Blue Hens. 

Men's basketball heads to Florida as women look to bounce back against Delaware at home

Princeton men’s basketball will face University of Miami this Saturday at 8 p.m. The team will compete at a neutral location in Miami, where the Tigers will have the opportunity to test an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent before entering Ivy League play in the New Year.

Full day of hoops tomorrow with double header action at Jadwin

The women’s and men’s basketball teams play games back-to-back at home in Jadwin Gymnasium on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The women’s game against No. 25 Villanova will tip first at 5:30 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the men’s game at approximately 8 p.m. against Lehigh.

Princeton preparing for rematch against Villanova

After finishing in second place in both the Ivy League regular season and falling in the championship round of the Ivy League tournament, the Tigers were given a home game in the first round of the WNIT, where they would face fellow tri-state area college Villanova. Last season, the Tigers were upset in Jadwin 59-54, putting a sour end to an otherwise great season. In the defeat, the Tigers were unable to stop the Villanova starting five, who accounted for all but 6 points in the Wildcats win. Villanova was also able to contain then-freshman Bella Alarie last season as she was held to only 9 points, one of the lowest marks in her Tiger career.

While the Princeton women’s basketball team did not get the win on Sunday, Nov. 19 — they lost to undefeated Georgia Tech 67-56 at Jadwin Gymnasium — many positive things stood out that show long term signs of success for the team. One of the biggest signs is the play of sophomore power forward Bella Alarie, who continued her hot start with her second straight double double.

Women’s basketball starts season strong against GW, looks to continue at Seton Hall

Last Friday night the Princeton women’s basketball team opened its season with a 72–52 win against the George Washington Colonials at home. Four Tigers scored in double figures, including senior guard Tia Weledji, who paced the team with 18 points.
