Track & Field: Season continues with Princeton Relays

For most students at Princeton, Intersession will be a vacation — a chance to cool down after the marathon of reading period and finals week. For the men’s and women’s track and field teams, however, the work is far from over. Before the next semester begins, Princeton’s track and field athletes will compete as close as Jadwin Gymnasium and as far as Seattle.

Men's Hockey: Tigers seek revenge against Clarkson

After a two-week exam break, the men’s hockey team will look to sustain its momentum with a home matchup against Sacred Heart on Jan. 25 before traveling to upstate New York to play league opponents St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The No. 19 Tigers (11-6-1 overall, 7-4-1 ECAC Hockey) are 6-1-1 in their last eight contests.

Squash: After long layoff, men, women return to courts for key matches against Bulldogs

After nearly a month-and-a-half hiatus from competitive matches, both men’s and women’s squash will resume play over Intersession and try to extend their undefeated seasons. The squads have handily dealt with each of their five opponents so far this season, and are hoping to extend the unbeaten streak to seven matches when they take on Penn on Jan. 26 at Jadwin Gymnasium and Yale on Jan. 29 in New Haven, Conn.

Women's Basketball: Brown, Yale next up on league slate

After topping Penn in its Ivy League opener, the women’s basketball team looks to build a strong start in league play and continue its defense of last year’s undefeated Ancient Eight title. Princeton (12-3 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) will go on the road during Intersession to take on Brown (4-10) and Yale (4-10). After wrapping up a very successful nonconference schedule, the Tigers enter their Ivy League slate as the clear team to beat.

Column: As we leave, some parting shots

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at things), our reign as sports editors for the 134th managing board of The Daily Princetonian has finally come to its end. It was only a few years ago that we signed up as contributors, expecting to spend two hours a week at a soccer game and another hour writing up coverage. Before we knew it, we were spending 20 hours a week in the newsroom editing articles, yelling at staff writers and watching helplessly as our GPAs plummeted. Presumably, this was worth it.

Women's Hockey: Princeton takes 7-game win streak into games with St. Lawrence, Clarkson

Junior goalie Rachel Weber’s conference-record-breaking shutout streak may have come to an end, but the women’s hockey team is still surging. Princeton (10-10-1 overall, 7-6-1 ECAC Hockey) will enter Intersession on a seven-game winning streak. The Tigers will host conference opponents St. Lawrence (9-10-2, 4-5) and Clarkson (6-12-3, 3-5-1) over the break.

After completing its best season in over a decade and then graduating five seniors, it would be a tall task to ask any team to improve upon the results of the previous year. This is precisely the situation the men’s volleyball team faces as it enters its 2011 campaign. Instead of approaching the year as one to rebuild, however, the team is determined to surpass the results of last season.

After a semester of astonishing viewership levels, The Daily Princetonian’s hit sports videocast “On The Prowl” has been acquired by ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports. The show will move to Channel 54 on TigerTV effective February.

Auburn, TCU, Artest vie for BCS title

College football was thrown into disarray yesterday when nine teams independently declared themselves the rightful champions of the Bowl Championship Series. In addition to Auburn, whose 22-19 victory over Oregon Monday night assured them the number one national ranking, claimants include TCU, Oregon, Stanford, Ohio St., Nevada, Akron, Williams, and Ron Artest.

Sterling indicted for cloning Blake Griffin

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was indicted yesterday and charged with four violations of federal laws against human cloning after the Clippers’ 130-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Sterling is suspected of having created illegal replicas of star rookie power forward Blake Griffin in an effort to improve the Clippers, whose record currently stands at 12-24.

Sprint football reaches new low, losing 97-5 in scrimmage against Colonial Club

The sprint football team was defeated by six members of Colonial Club in a scrimmage held on Poe Field on Tuesday night. After a hard-fought 1 minute, 34 seconds to open the game, Colonial pulled away for a 97-5 victory.

NCAA inquires about U.’s Cam Newton meddling

Athletic Director Gary Walters ’67 has been implicated in the ongoing NCAA investigation of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton. Newton, who led the Auburn Tigers to a 22-19 victory over Oregon in Monday night’s national championship game, was apparently offered $1,000,000 by Walters to enroll at Princeton prior to this school year.

Women's Basketball: Tigers open Ivy schedule with victory

The final score of the women’s basketball team’s 56-45 victory over Penn on Saturday night hardly comes as a surprise. The Tigers (12-3 overall, 1-0 Ivy League), who extended their conference winning streak to 20 games, have beaten several national powerhouses such as Southern California. On top of that, the Tigers are ranked No. 27, almost 300 slots higher than the Quakers (5-6, 0-1). However, the first half of both teams’ Ivy League opener at Jadwin Gymnasium looked more like a battle between equals.

Track and Field: Men, women runners notch decisive victories to open year

The women decisively won the Princeton Quad Meet at Jadwin Gymnasium on Friday against Rutgers, St. Joseph’s and St. John’s. Princeton won 12 events, giving them 209 points, good for first place in the competition. St. John’s came in second with 139 points.

On Tap with ... Brett Lullo

Senior Brett Lullo, of the men's swimming and diving team, competes in the butterfly, freestyle and individual medley events. At last season's Ivy League championship, Lullo placed seventh in two events (the 200-yard butterfly and freestyle) and reached the consolation finals of another (the 200-yard individual medley). When he's not in the pool or hitting the books, Lullo is hard at work as the social chair of Tiger Inn.
