Men's Basketball: Defense falters late as Tigers drop 2 of 3 at tourney

The men’s basketball team dropped its first two games before thoroughly dismantling West Alabama in the TicketCity Legends Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. Princeton (2-5) struggled in its opening games against Bucknell (5-2) and Morehead State (3-4), losing 62-56 and 68-56, respectively. The Tigers recovered on Sunday afternoon to pummel Division-II West Alabama (1-6) by 24 points, but they still face many questions after a rough opening stretch.

In a less-than-surprising announcement, freshman running back Chuck Dibilio was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. Elsewhere in the league, a double-overtime victory spared Columbia from a winless season, but it was not enough to save head coach Norries Wilson's job.

Men's Basketball: Shooting woes upset Princeton

At the brink of a one-point loss in the final seconds, senior guard Doug Davis just couldn’t do it again. Davis’s three-point attempt bounced off the rim and backboard as the buzzer rang, and the Tigers suffered a 56-55 loss to Elon on Tuesday night. But in the end, it won’t be that missed shot that haunts the Tigers — Princeton will be most afflicted by the 22 it missed in a dismal first half.

Column: The case for (cautious) optimism

Well, this wasn’t a great season, was it? The Princeton Football Tigers were not brilliant this year. A 1-9 overall (1-6 Ivy League) finish was not what they were hoping for, and it may not necessarily be what they deserved. But it’s what they got, and it’s what we’re all stuck with, at least until September. But, amid the gloom, there is — without a shadow of doubt — reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future of the program.

Before Sunday, I had always imagined marathon courses as something analogous to gladiator arenas. I imagined the runners as the gladiators. I even pictured a crowd of riotous spectators and a Russell Crowe clone emerging victorious from battle. But running in the Philadelphia Marathon was not quite as I imagined.

The men’s and women’s fencing teams got off to a good start this weekend at the Penn State Garret Open, taking a total of three bronze medals and one gold. Junior epeeist Ed Kelley defeated one of the hosts' fencers to win the men's epee event.

Men's Hockey: Ranked opponents drop Princeton in N.Y.

The men’s ice hockey team faced two top-20 opponents on the road this weekend as they continue conference play. The Tigers (2-6-1 overall, 2-5 ECAC) were blanked by No. 17 Cornell (5-2, 5-1) in their game Friday night 4-0 and dropped their game 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to No. 16 Colgate (8-4-1, 4-2). It was the first time Princeton had to face two ranked opponents in two consecutive days.

Squash: Both teams sweep pair as 2011-12 slate starts

The success the men’s squash team experienced their first weekend reflects only a small part of the sense of teamwork that’s been building up before the season even began. The women’s squash team topped its male counterparts, beating both F&M and Middlebury in perfect 9-0 sweeps. Remarkably, Princeton has yet to lose even an individual game in the 54 total played, with each Tiger winning by 3-0 scores.

Women's Hockey: Defense falters in twin home defeats

Penalties and power plays were the three big “P”s at Baker Rink this weekend, and the women’s hockey team came out on the losing side. The Tigers fell to No. 3 Cornell 3-1 on Friday and lost to Colgate 3-0 on Saturday, extending their losing streak to four games.

Cross Country: Banfich takes program-best 5th at NCAAs

Even though her team struggled during the season, senior cross country captain Alex Banfich never failed to bring her best. Despite traveling to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday without a team, the three-time All-America proved that she is truly one of the best distance runners in the nation. Banfich powered down the final stretch of the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course to claim fifth place overall, the best finish ever for a Princeton cross country individual.

Men's Basketball: Princeton leads entire game for Henderson’s first victory

The men’s basketball team secured a 61-53 win over visiting Buffalo courtesy of a fabulous first-half performance. Princeton won for the first time this season, also marking the first victory for head coach Mitch Henderson ’98. The win suggests that last season’s success may not be as far-fetched a standard to emulate as the opening losses had indicated.

Men's Water Polo: Tigers drop Navy to take Eastern title

The men’s water polo team is the 2011 CWPA Eastern champion. To reach the finals, the Tigers defeated returning champion St. Francis 13-11 in overtime. Playing against Navy for the title, Princeton won 10-7 to earn a spot in the Final Four at the NCAA Tournament in Berkeley, Calif.

Wrestling: Kolodzik and Frey push wrestlers to 4th place in Keystone Open

On Sunday, the wrestling team battled in the Keystone Open, where they finished fourth ahead of several rival Ivy League teams, including Penn and Harvard. Both junior 125-pounder Garrett Frey and senior 157-pounder Daniel Kolodzik made their way to the championship match of their weight classes, and six wrestlers finished in the top six of their classes. It was a resounding success for Princeton, which rebounded from losing their first two matches at the beginning of the weekend.

Women's Basketball: Stifling defense produces big win

The women’s basketball team provided a defensive surge in the second half against Villanova to dissipate the Wildcats’ offense and earn a decisive 56-41 victory. This win gives Princeton its biggest win of the season so far while delivering the Wildcats their first loss of the year.

Football: Epperly’s start can’t hide team’s faults

The football team lost its final game of the season at Dartmouth by a score of 24-17 this past Saturday, giving the Tigers a final record of 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the Ivy League. A field goal early in the third quarter gave the Tigers a 17-15 lead, but that was the last time the Tigers put points on the board, and a touchdown and field goal by Dartmouth were enough to get the hosts past the Tigers.
