Sports Shorts: Columbia finds coach; Harvard takes 1st loss

Pete Mangurian was named as the new head coach of Columbia’s football program in a press conference on Friday afternoon. A coach with former Ivy League experience, Mangurian headed Cornell’s program from 1998-2000, taking a team that finished last in his first season to second place in 2000. He will try to perform a similar turnaround with the Lions, who finished 1-9 in 2011, tied with Princeton for last in the Ivy League with a 1-6 conference record.

Women's Basketball: No help for Rasheed in 65-52 defeat

Despite a strong effort from junior forward Niveen Rasheed against Navy on Friday night, the women’s basketball team could not recreate the full team effort that has carried Princeton so far this season. Rasheed scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but no other player came close to either of these figures and the Tigers allowed the Midshipmen to break out of a close battle with a 12-2 run in the final three minutes to claim a 65-52 victory.

Women's Hockey: Offense comes up empty in shutout losses

The women’s hockey team came out on the losing side of two shutouts against the league leaders this weekend, falling to Quinnipiac at Baker Rink on Friday night and again on the road on Saturday afternoon. With the pair of losses, the Tigers dropped back below .500 in conference play but remain tied for sixth in the standings.

Men's Hockey: Princeton can’t pull final trigger in crunch time

The men’s hockey team stayed close to its opponent for most of Saturday’s matchup at Baker Rink, but Harvard held onto its lead and overcame the Tigers 4-3. The Tigers had won the first game of the season series in Cambridge, Mass., by the same score on Nov. 4. On Sunday, a frustrating weekend continued with a 3-2 loss at Quinnipiac.

Cricket: Bowled over by a foreign sport

I was only in Dillon Gymnasium, but at the time, it sort of felt like I had gone to a faraway place. In my mind, it was a parallel universe, where baseball had different rules and artifacts had conspicuously British-sounding names. Of course, the sport I was learning was cricket, and instead of being played in a parallel universe, it’s just not played on this side of the globe.

Women's Basketball: Rasheed, Edwards hope to continue Tigers’ strong start at Navy

The women’s basketball team has had a successful season so far, accumulating seven wins in eight games and claiming the best record in the Ivy League. The Tigers lead the conference in points allowed and scoring margin, an indication of the team’s tremendous defensive play so far. Princeton also features junior forward Niveen Rasheed, one of the best players in the league. Rasheed leads the league in rebounds per game with 7.6 and is third in scoring with 16.9 points per game.

Men's Basketball: 7-game road swing continues at Drexel

The men’s basketball team will travel to Philadelphia this weekend as it faces Drexel in the second match of a sequence of seven away games. The Tigers will look to make it four wins in a row after triumphing in the dying seconds in the annual match against Rutgers on Wednesday. Drexel needs to regroup after a difficult start to the season that has seen four losses in its last five games.

Princeton (4-7-2, 3-5-1) is riding a three-game unbeaten streak, highlighted by its most recent game, a 3-3 tie against No. 10 Union.

Around the Ivies: Top challengers to Princeton’s three-peat bid

The women’s basketball team came sprinting out of the gate this season, preparing to claim a third-consecutive Ivy League title. Princeton (7-1 overall) won its first six games before succumbing 81-70 to unbeaten No. 22 Delaware on Dec. 1. Junior forward Niveen Rasheed has led the team in points, averaging 16.9 per game. Princeton’s defense has led the conference, holding its opponents to only 52.8 points per game and totaling 94 steals. The Tigers have excelled in their non-conference games, leading the Ivy League as they look forward to the start of conference play on Jan. 7.

Track & Field: Quest to repeat indoor sweep begins Saturday

Last year the men’s and women’s track teams achieved the height of conference domination, winning every single Ivy League championship title from cross country to outdoor track. The 2010-11 squad was arguably one of the best groups of track and field athletes that Princeton has ever produced. Nevertheless, this year’s pack of runners, throwers and jumpers is striving to be even better. Though the women missed a win at the Heptagonal Championships in cross country, coming into the indoor season the men are still in the hunt for a second straight triple crown.

Men's Basketball: Hummer hits winner as Tigers survive scare

Entering Wednesday night, the men’s basketball team had not won at Rutgers since 1999. After Princeton blew a 17-point lead late in the second half, it seemed that the streak would continue. But despite a strong push from the Scarlet Knights, the Tigers held off the hosts when junior forward Ian Hummer floated in a game-winning layup with 2.7 seconds left to go, giving Princeton a 59-57 victory.

When junior forward Ian Hummer went for a layup or pulled up for a jumper during the 2010-11 season, he did so in a No. 34 jersey very similar to the one his father, Ed Hummer ’67, wore over four decades ago.The straps over Ed’s shoulders, however, are much thinner than those over Ian’s. On Ed’s jersey, black outlines enclose orange lettering; on Ian’s, it’s the opposite. Ed’s shorts are much shorter, and his jersey lacks the iconic Nike swoosh that his son sports.These subtle nuances — plus the fact that this year’s Tigers already have completely different jerseys, much as last year’s were completely different from the ones the 2009-10 team wore — show that the design of the Princeton basketball jersey is, in fact, anything but static.

Men's Basketball: Fresh-faced forward makes early impact

Eight games into his basketball career, freshman forward Denton Koon has already had an impact on his team. He is coming off of his best game of the season, in which he went six-for-seven from the field for 13 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass, to help the Tigers beat Lafayette 69-54. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of his performance was the two dunks that fired up the home crowd.

Charley Wang of the men’s swimming team is part of a senior class gunning for its fourth Ivy League title in as many years. Wang earned second-team All-Ivy honors in 2009 and won the 100 butterfly last year in the Tigers’ biggest dual meet against Harvard and Yale. He sat down to talk to the ‘Prince’ about his unusual start in swimming, his dabble into a music blog and the characters that are his teammates.

In recent years, the University has encouraged newly admitted Princeton students to consider taking a year off before beginning college. This gap-year phenomenon has grown in popularity because it offers the opportunity to travel the world, explore yourself and gain a mature perspective before starting school. Although they do not necessarily participate in traditional gap-year programs, almost every member of the men’s ice hockey team takes a year or two off before starting college.

In their Ivy League openers against Penn on Saturday, both the women’s and men’s squash teams hit some difficulties. Both teams engaged in tough battles — the women’s team experienced some unlucky bounces, as none of the tight matches went their way, while the men remained more fortunate and managed to come away with a victory.

Fencing: Tiger squads finish 4-1 in 1st dual meets

Both fencing teams looked very strong this weekend in the Penn State Duals, the first dual meet of the season. Only undefeated Penn State beat either the men's or women's squad, leaving Princeton with a desire to show what it's made of as the season continues.
