Women's Volleyball: Tigers undefeated in league after road trip

With a 20-14 lead in the third set at Harvard, it looked like the women’s volleyball team was poised to take a commanding 2-1 lead. But suddenly the Crimson, led by outside hitter Taylor Docter and setter Hannah Schmidt, fought back to shock Princeton (6-7 overall, 3-0 Ivy League) and win the set. But the Tigers fought back, winning the fourth set 25-21 and the fifth 15-8, taking down Harvard in Princeton's sixth five-set victory this season.

Field Hockey: Tigers shut out Lions before test against No. 4 Maryland

Under the lights in New York City, the field hockey team held Columbia scoreless with an 8-0 shutout on Friday night. Princeton snapped Columbia’s six-game win streak, giving the Tigers sole possession of first place in the Ivy League as the only team undefeated in conference play. After the Tigers’ 16th consecutive victory over the Lions, only four Ivy League contests stand between Princeton and its 21st Ivy League crown. But before they resume conference play, the No. 3 Tigers will host No. 4 Maryland in a marquee game at Bedford Field at 4 p.m.

Golf: Fall is chance for Tigers to tune up

For most students, walking across Springdale Golf Course is an infrequent occurrence, a gateway to the wonders of Thursday dinner at the Graduate College. However, for members of the Princeton men’s and women’s golf teams, walking along fairways and greens is a regular activity. During the fall and spring, the teams prepare for regular tournaments against teams from the Ivy League and beyond.

Sprint Football: Despite rally, Princeton falls to Cornell, 22-15

This weekend the sprint football team headed to Cornell to face the Big Red (3-0 overall, 2-0 CSFL). While the Tigers rallied in the second half, their efforts fell short, ending in a 22-15 loss. As in last week’s game against Navy, the first half was Princeton’s weaker one, as the visitors were outscored 20-0 before halftime.

Cross Country: Juniors lead men's 2nd-place showing at Notre Dame

Going into the Notre Dame Invitational, the men’s cross country team was determined to warn the rest of the nation that it was fit and ready to aggressively compete. Racing in their first big meet of the season, the men fought through the crush of runners and worked their way up through the field to finish second out of 20 teams overall behind Tulsa. Ranked 17th before the weekend, the Tigers topped No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 North Carolina State, No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 21 New Mexico, among other deep and talented squads.

Women's Soccer: Lazo’s flurry keeps Princeton unbeaten in Ivy play

After a drawn-out, empty-handed first half, the women’s soccer team’s match against Dartmouth on Saturday was decided in a span of just five minutes. Sophomore forward Lauren Lazo’s back-to-back goals late in the second half delivered the Tigers (6-3-1 overall, 2-0 Ivy League) a 2-1 lead and their fourth straight win.

Men's Soccer: Porter’s game-winner caps Ivy League opener

The men’s soccer team (5-3 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) dominated defending Ivy League co-champion Dartmouth (3-5, 0-1) on all sides on Saturday night, culminating with sophomore forward Cameron Porter’s golden goal just one minute, 45 seconds into sudden-death overtime. Fired up after a foul on Dartmouth, one that sent sophomore midfielder Joe Saitta off the field with ankle pain, Porter slipped into the 18-yard box and gave the Tigers major cause for celebration.

Football: Tigers down Lions 33-6 for 1st victory

NEW YORK — The football team’s victory this week against Columbia, the first of Princeton’s season and the third career win with the Tigers for head coach Bob Surace ’90, was a story of redemption in more ways than one. Freshman kicker Nolan Bieck was perfect on four field-goal attempts after missing three last week. Sophomore quarterback Quinn Epperly, who did little with the limited playing time he was given in the first two games, played almost an entire half and proved he could produce points. Most importantly, the Tigers won convincingly after two weeks of close, heartbreaking losses.

With high hopes for its running backs, the football team will head to the Big Apple on Saturday in an attempt to jump-start what has so far been a season of heartbreakers. Despite falling just short in each of their first two games, the Tigers (0-2) have displayed more ability than was expected of them and have reason to believe that this weekend’s game against Columbia (1-1) could be the beginning of a turnaround.

Cross Country: Princeton faces 1st big test in South Bend

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will face their first true challenges of the season this weekend. Since their season openers at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8, the Tigers have been putting in miles to prepare themselves for the rigorous racing ahead. This afternoon, select runners will compete at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., while the rest of the teams will race at Lehigh’s Paul Short Invitational.

Field Hockey: Pennsylvania, field hockey's hotbed

If you look at a list of the top field hockey players in the NCAA, or the roster of Team USA, two stats will stick out: There are a lot of goals scored, and a lot of Pennsylvanians. Nobody seems to have a definite answer for why the Keystone State dominates the sport, but there’s no denying that it does. As of last week, 87 players on the top 10 teams in the NCAA come from Pennsylvania. Consider that New Jersey has the second-most players on that list — with 23. And Pennsylvania is also home of the best of the best, including nine of 16 members of the U.S. Olympic team.

The women’s golf team placed eighth out of a 16-team field at the Yale Fall Invitational last Sunday. Junior Kelly Shon led both the Tigers and all other Ivy League players at the tournament, finishing fourth individually at +1 after shooting 72 on the last day, at par for The Course at Yale.

Column: Stat Corner - Tackling defensive statistics

Calculating defensive statistics in football can be problematic. Each stop can be credited to one player as a solo tackle, or to two players as an assisted tackle. And that’s where the art comes in. If a linebacker has the running back stopped, and a safety comes in later and helps him to the ground, does the safety deserve a share of the tackle too? In the scrum of a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-one, how many defensive linemen were involved in the play? Often, there’s no clear answer to these questions — it’s up to the scorer to use his judgment and make a decision.

Men's Soccer: Longtime Princetonian keeps on kicking

For over 20 years, Jim Barlow has been a name synonymous with Princeton men’s soccer. Barlow started his long and storied Princeton career as a student athlete, arriving on campus in 1987 and graduating in 1991. He was the 1987 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, 1990 Ivy League Player of the Year and a three-time first-team all-Ivy League selection.

Men's Tennis: New coach has sights set beyond Ancient Eight

Under former head coach Glenn Michibata’s 12-year tenure, the men’s tennis team never won the Ivy League championship. The team came close — in 2011, the Tigers went 6-0 in the Ivy League before losing to Cornell by one tight match in the deciding meeting — but still has not won the title in the 21st century.
