Men's Basketball: Cagers’ season of improvement ends in CBI quarters

While their peers were busy sleeping off midterm blues or scrambling to work on junior papers and senior theses, members of the men’s basketball team saw their season come to a sobering close at Pittsburgh in the quarterfinal of the College Basketball Invitational last Monday. Princeton (20-12) lost 82-61 to mark the end of the debut season for head coach Mitch Henderson ’98, which featured lots of encouraging play after a rough start.

Fencing: Yergler takes NCAA title as team finishes 2nd

The men’s and women’s fencing teams entered the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, with very high expectations. The Tigers met those hopes with the best performance in program history, finishing second to host Ohio State in the team scoring, and on Sunday afternoon, junior epeeist Jonathan Yergler won the national title in men’s epee.

The women’s basketball team lost to No. 8-seed Kansas State 67-64 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The loss led to Princeton’s third consecutive first-round exit in their third straight appearance at the Big Dance.

This year marked senior Daniel Kolodzik’s first and last appearance in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, and he’s determined to make it a memorable one. The senior won his first match yesterday afternoon, a 9-0 major decision over Maryland’s No. 21 Kyle John, and beat Northern Iowa's No. 18 David Bonin to reach the quarterfinals.

Women's Lacrosse: Virginia continues rivalry at Class of 1952 Stadium

Last weekend the women’s lacrosse team routed Brown 18-8 to open up its conference season with a bang. On Saturday, the No. 14 Tigers (2-2 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) will resume non-conference play in what could be a great showdown between two nationally ranked squads, hosting No. 8 Virginia at 5 p.m.

After sweeping the Ivy League season and winning its games by an average margin of 31 points, the women’s basketball team is headed for something it has not experienced in a while: a tough matchup. On Saturday, the Tigers (24-4 overall, 14-0 Ivy League) will head to Bridgeport, Conn., to face Kansas State (19-13, 9-9 Big 12) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will tip off at 11:20 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Sophomore Lisa Boyce of the women’s swimming and diving team qualified for three events at the NCAA Championships this weekend at Auburn University. In Thursday’s 50-yard freestyle, Boyce finished in 46th place with a time of 22.77 seconds.

If you had told a member of the men’s basketball team at this time last year that he would be facing Pitt in a postseason game in 2012, he would have assumed that meant the NCAA Tournament. After winning the Ivy League and taking Kentucky down to the wire in the NCAA Tournament last season, Princeton had high hopes heading into the year. Those hopes have not completely come to fruition, as the Tigers did not qualify for the Big Dance, but Princeton is getting set to face off against a traditional Big East powerhouse in the College Basketball Invitational.

The men’s lacrosse team is ready to open Ivy League play. Princeton is in a drastically different position heading into its conference kickoff against Penn on Saturday. In the early season, Princeton has averaged 11.0 goals per game, while last year it only reached that total in one of its 12 games.

Updated: Princeton extends season, faces Pitt on Monday

Forty-eight hours after being snubbed for a spot in the National Invitation Tournament, Princeton beat Evansville 95-86 to keep its season alive in the College Basketball Invitational. Princeton will now travel to face Pittsburgh on Monday night in the second round of the 16-team tournament. The Panthers (18-16) advanced by throttling Wofford 81-63, as they used a 16-0 first-half run on the path to victory.

On Monday afternoon, the Tigers learned they were ranked No. 24 in the national Associated Press poll, the first top-25 ranking ever for an Ivy League team. Softball: Late dingers headline weekend games

When junior first baseman Alex Peyton stepped up to the plate in the first inning against Maryland pitcher Lexi Carroll on Saturday afternoon with the bases loaded, she only had one thing on her mind — to put the ball in play. The junior did more than that, however, using of the strength in her 5-foot-10-inch frame to pull the first pitch she saw over the fence, giving Princeton (2-7) a 4-0 lead over the Terrapins.
