The art of competition

A Princeton acceptance letter does not mark the end of competitive application processes. Indeed, there is plenty to compete for as soon as students first walk through the University's gates, including Wilson School admission, residential adviser spots, eating club membership, campus jobs and even a senior-year study carrel.

Marriage matters

Bush calls it "the most fundamental institution of civilization." Sherif Girgis '08, the president of the Anscombe Society, calls it a "unique, irreplaceable contribution to real people's (especially children's) well being." Yet millions of people around the world are denied it in an ongoing struggle of grassroots protest and get-out-the-vote campaigns.

Covering all the bases, so to speak

For a course in research methods, I recently found myself critiquing a study titled "Watching Sex on Television Predicts Adolescent Initiation of Sexual Behavior" from the journal Pediatrics. Conducted two years ago by researchers at the Rand Corporation, the study concluded that "watching sex on TV ... may hasten adolescent sexual initiation."Studies of this sort often have trouble separating cause from effect.
