George and West GS ’80 discuss Christianity

But the Robert George who debated his close friend, religion and African American studies professor Cornel West GS ’80, on Wednesday afternoon spoke as a committed Christian first and foremost, explaining that religion can and should strongly inform people’s actions.

MacArthur fellow Dabiri ’01 on jellyfish, energy and Princeton

Biophysicist John Dabiri ’01 was named a MacArthur Fellow on Tuesday, an honor that comes with a no-strings-attached “genius grant” of $500,000 over five years. Dabiri was reached in California just hours after the announcement and talked with The Daily Princetonian about swimming with the jellyfish, making new discoveries and finding inspiration at Princeton.

Forbes and Whitman will both serve Saturday meals

The University has reinstated Saturday meals at both Forbes and Whitman colleges, a year after it implemented a cost-saving initiative that left only one of the two dining halls open on Saturdays.“A number of the cost-reduction initiatives exceeded our projections,” Director of Dining Services Stu Orefice said in an e-mail, citing “the tray-free dining program and modifications to our purchasing program.”

New printing system causes delays

At the start of the academic year, the Office of Information Technology introduced a single cluster printing queue and deactivated location-specific printing queues in an effort to streamline campus printing. Less than a month later, though, students have reported technical problems ranging from lengthy printing delays to the new queue’s incompatibility with their laptop operating systems.

West GS ’80 critiques current state of ‘critique’

Cornel West GS ’80 believes that Princeton is “committed to paideia education.”West described paideia as “this cultivation of critique, this bearing witness to love and justice and ... questing for hope, though knowing that we will need help,” in a speech Tuesday before roughly 250 students in McCosh 10. The African American studies professor’s talk, “Cultivating Critique in the Age of Obama,” inaugurated the Signature Lecture Series organized by Wilson College.

New rules for Cornell’s Greek system toughen hazing penalties

As the working group on campus social and residential life prepares to examine the role of fraternities and sororities on campus, the Cornell University administration has mandated a major overhaul of the school’s Greek system.Under Cornell’s new rules, announced in August, Greek organizations must eliminate all activities involving alcohol from their recruitment and pledging activities, according to The Cornell Daily Sun. The new provisions also toughen penalties for hazing and state that all parties with alcohol should be closed to freshmen.

Jones: Energy, jobs are linked

America requires a new approach to energy policy that also diversifies the country’s workforce, Jones argued in his first public address as a visiting fellow on Monday afternoon.In his speech, titled “Beyond Green Jobs: The Next American Economy and The Politics of Hope,” Jones said that the United States should strike a balance between government regulation and business innovation in its energy plans, focusing on renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

Study: Physical posture may influence political beliefs

The way you sit may influence the way you vote, according to a new study by psychology professor Daniel Oppenheimer and Thomas Trail GS ’10.The researchers discovered that people who lean to the left are more likely to support liberal beliefs — a physical manifestation of the familiar left-right political division that originated in the 1791 French Legislative Assembly, where liberals sat on the left and conservatives on the right.

Town residents debate Dinky replacement

Brandishing a number of large crowbars, Chip Crider GS ’79 criticized a recent proposal by Princeton Borough and Princeton Township to replace the Dinky with a bus rapid transit system. “A BRT won’t work in Princeton because we don’t have the space for it and we don’t have the demand for it,” he said, using the crowbars to represent large transit systems like the BRT.

Out of the lab, off to Africa

Caroline Park ’11 knows that health care can’t be learned from a textbook.This summer, Park’s senior thesis in ecology and evolutionary biology brought her to Senegal, where she studied the impact of dam construction on demographic, health and economic conditions in the surrounding villages.“You can read a lot about health care, but once you actually get out into the villages and see how people are living every day, it gives you new perspective about how development is actually progressing there,” Park said.
