University introduces gap-year plan for new admits

Seeking to bolster international opportunities for students, the University will announce a ?bridge year? program today that would allow incoming freshmen to defer matriculation and spend a year doing community service in a foreign country.

$4M gift to expand U.'s jazz program

The Princeton University Jazz Program will look to expand its course offerings, staff positions and international initiatives beginning next year using a $4 million donation from Anthony Lee ?79.Lee, who considers jazz ?a lifelong passion,? was inspired to contribute by the $101 million donation from Peter Lewis ?55 and by the University?s new emphasis on bolstering the arts in undergraduate education outlined in a speech by President Tilghman.A jazz guitarist with a recording studio in his home, Lee said a central part of his Princeton experience was an introductory jazz course taught by Henry Martin that ?cemented [his] love [for jazz].?Anthony Branker ?80, who was also in Martin?s course but was not acquainted with Lee at the time, now heads the University?s jazz program.?Mr. Lee?s gift will enable us to realize a number of our educational goals that have been in place for sometime now but have been difficult to attainbecause of a lack of funding,? Branker said.

When Jeremy Arceneaux ?10?s roommate walked into the room and informed the Riverdale, Ill., native of the shootings at Northern Illinois University (NIU), Arceneaux?s mind immediately jumped to his family and friends.?I know a handful of people who go to NIU, one of whom is my cousin so the thought of a shooting hitting so close to home really frightens me,? he said in an e-mail.

Students, staff, alumni and community members discussed solutions for high-risk drinking at a workshop on Friday organized by the Alcohol Coalition Committee (ACC).Around 80 members of the University community attended the four-hour workshop to discuss why and how to create a healthier drinking culture on campus.
