John Prendergast selected for Crystal Tiger Award
The Crystal Tiger award selection committee announced Friday that this year’s award recipient is human rights activist and author John Prendergast. He will accept the award and deliver an address on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in McCosh 50.
Prendergast is the fourth recipient of the Crystal Tiger, which honors individuals who, according to the committee’s website, “have been agents of progress: leaders, thinkers, and creators who have, by their work and example, improved society and strengthened our values.” Previous recipients were former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006, former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates in 2005 and former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in 2004.
Prendergast has been part of a number of initiatives to protect human rights. He currently serves as co-chair of the ENOUGH Project, which works to end genocide and crimes against humanity. During the Clinton administration, he served as director of African affairs at the National Security Council. He has also worked for the United Nations, human rights organizations and think tanks. Prendergast is the author of eight books on Africa, including “Not on Our Watch: The Mission to end Genocide in Darfur and Beyond,” which he co-authored with actor-activist Don Cheadle.
Free tickets to the lecture will be available to all members of the public at Frist Campus Center from noon to 6 p.m. from April 14-16. Unfilled seats will also be available on the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
