Newberry ’13 distributes petiton on animal rights, responding to rat treatment

A psychology concentrator circulated a petition last week calling on the University and other institutions to “increase the standard of treatment of lab animals.” This represents the latest incident of public outcry following allegations that University staffers mistreated primates and rats.

Redistricting mulled at meeting

On Wednesday evening, the Mercer County Board of Elections held its second general public meeting for Princeton residents with the purpose of presenting two possible scenarios for new election districts in the soon-to-be consolidated Princeton.As requested by the University, in the potential election districts map presented to the audience, all the undergraduate and most of the graduate dorms were drawn into one district, with the main campus covered by only two districts.

Invited to speak to a crowd of Occupy Princeton supporters gathered Tuesday evening at Campus Club, Hedges commented on the Occupy movement across the country. A supporter of and activist within the Occupy movement, Hedges started off by discussing the history of radical, socialist and populist movements in America. He then mentioned the current status of Occupy movements, especially the protests in Zuccotti Park, as he has first-hand experience protesting in New York City with the Occupy movement.

Jeff Bezos ’86, MacKenzie Bezos ’92 donate $15 million

Founder and chief executive of Amazon.com Jeff Bezos ’86 and his wife MacKenzie Bezos ’92 are donating $15 million to the University to establish a center in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, according to a University press release. The donation will create the Bezos Center for Neural Circuit Dynamics.

SAEN accuses University of rat abuse

In a press release published on its website last Thursday, the animal activist group Stop Animal Exploitation Now! accused the University of allowing at least 10 laboratory rats to die of starvation.According to the account by an anonymous former laboratory employee, the rats were not given food or water in what was perhaps a miscommunication between animal staff and research staff. Two of the rats starved to death after a period of days and those remaining needed to be euthanized.
