Borough Mayor Yina Moore ’79 said she will not run for mayor of consolidated Princeton. Moore will instead campaign for a position on the town council of the consolidated municipalities, effective January 2013.
Colleges and universities across the nation are making an effort to reduce plastic waste by decreasing the consumption of bottled water. According to Bloomberg News, over 90 schools, including many members of the Ivy League, have banned or restricted the sale of bottled water.
For the most part, all undergraduate students are treated equally under the University’s disciplinary guidelines and procedures. While they are not necessarily held to a different set of standards, residential college advisers are perhaps one exception to the generally egalitarian nature of the disciplinary code.

Women compose 63 percent of this year’s candidates for Young Alumni Trustee, a significant increase over past years when about a third of the candidates for the position were women.Of this year’s 41 candidates — the largest slate of candidates since 1999 — 26 are female, according to Young Alumni Trustee administrator Leslie Rowley.

But instead of watching sports highlights or listening to music while he lifts weights, Zelizer mulls over ideas for his weekly CNN column.It is rare for professors to appear in mass media as much as Zelizer does. In addition to teaching HIS 583: Readings in American Political History this semester, Zelizer has appeared 18 times on Bloomberg television in the past month. On Sept. 10, he authored a column in The New York Times about the history of one-term presidents. Two days later, he was back in his home outlet, penning away on the political legacy of 9/11.
Daniel Ellsberg, who famously leaked the top secret Pentagon Papers in the midst of the Vietnam War, gave a lecture on Thursday afternoon titled “Secrets, Lies and Leaks: From the Pentagon Papers to WikiLeaks.”The conversation also included Bart Gellman ’82, a visiting lecturer in the Wilson School and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. The pair discussed the balance between government secrecy and the First Amendment.
Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5-hour ENERGY and a University dropout, was named to Forbes Magazine’s list of the world’s wealthiest people for the first time on Wednesday.Bhargava’s wealth is valued at about $1.3 billion, placing him at 960th on Forbes’s list of the 1,226 wealthiest people on the planet. According to a profile written on him that appeared in Forbes in February, Bhargava speculates that he is probably the wealthiest Indian living in the United States.
When Brian Binnie GS ’78 first arrived in outer space, he could see the topography of California and the Pacific Ocean spreading out below him, as well as weather patterns. The atmosphere separated the black void of space from Earth, and Binnie described it as a “thin blue electric ribbon of light.”“You know, you see the pictures on magazine covers, but the eye is so much more dynamic than any camera or video, and it ... lasts for five minutes,” Binnie said.

Surgeon, author and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed health issues that are relevant to Princeton students and steps they can take to address them on Thursday night as part of the Mental Health Awareness Week being held by the USG and Sustained Dialogue.As the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions and the host of his own television program, “The Dr. Oz Show,” Oz was named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2008 and is also the parent of a Princeton alumna.
Starting next year, fraternities and sororities at Yale will be prohibited from holding fall rush for freshmen, Yale College Dean Mary Miller and Dean of Student Affairs Marichel Gentry announced to the Yale student body last Thursday.
The Earth’s tropical forests play a key role in absorbing man-made carbon dioxide, and scientists have traditionally believed that tropical forests could absorb nitrogen-based pollutants as well. However, research published by a team including ecology and evolutionary biology professor Lars Hedin and geosciences professor Daniel Sigman suggests that tropical forests may be less able to absorb polluting nitrogen than previously thought.
All but one of the University faculty members and administrators who have given directly to the 2012 presidential candidates so far have donated to President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, according to federal records of donations to presidential campaigns. In total, faculty and administrators have given $20,896 to Obama for America in the current election cycle.
A new survey by the Wilson School suggests that foreclosure filings in Mercer County may increase in the future. The 2011 Mercer County Community Issues Survey, conducted last fall, gathered information on social and economic issues affecting Mercer County residents from 2006 to 2011 — particularly on housing issues such as current mortgage debt and foreclosures — with the goal of disseminating this data to policymakers and the public.

New Jersey Democratic Congressman Donald Payne, who was elected to Congress in 1988, died Tuesday in Livingston, N.J., after a battle with colon cancer. Payne represented a heavily Democratic district in northeastern New Jersey, which includes most of Newark.Payne announced his illness last month. Despite his intention to fight the disease, Payne was transported back to New Jersey from Washington, D.C., on Friday.
