Students will no longer need brass keys to enter their rooms but will instead be able to hold their proxes in front of a reader and enter a PIN.
With the approval of the Facilities Planning Group, keyless locks have already been installed on dorm rooms in Forbes, Butler and Wilson, with the remainder of the locks to be replaced over the summer, University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said in an email.
Under the new program, students will still be able to enter any dorm building with their proxes, Mbugua said, and added that lockouts under the 1938 pilot program this past year have been handled no differently than lockouts for students with brass keys.
Mbugua also said that the University will save money through the program because the loss of a master key will no longer require the locks on the whole building to be replaced.
More details about the program will be provided to students over the summer.
