When Veda Sunassee ’10 took EGR 495: Entrepreneurial Leadership with former visiting professor Gordon Bloom in the fall of 2009, he was inspired to take what he had learned in the classroom and try to change the world.Sunassee, along with classmates Faaez ul Haq ’12 and Amira Polack ’12, joined Danny Growald ’11 to found the Princeton Social Entrepreneurship Initiative. Polack, the current co-president, described PSEI as a student organization spin-off of the course that they took three years ago.

McCosh to divert patients to hospital

In the midst of a campus-wide gastroenteritis outbreak, McCosh Health Center is diverting patients to the University Medical Center at Princeton due to a lack of available beds at McCosh, the Department of Public Safety confirmed late Thursday night.“All the beds are full” at McCosh, said Public Safety Sgt. Rob Adams, adding that students requiring transport are being taken to UMCP until further notice.

Shafir brings behavioral input to D.C.

Every year, psychology and Wilson School professor Eldar Shafir is amused by the semester-end evaluations of his popular course WWS 312: The Psychology of Decision Making and Judgment.“When some students say that lectures are not well organized, I just crack up. When they are in my class and buying shoes online, how would they know?” he said. “Either they are buying the wrong shoes or having no idea what I am saying, but to think that they can successfully do both is completely wrong.”

U. neutral on Dept. of Education’s college affordability ranking tool

The Obama administration recently released a new initiative designed to assist college-bound students and their families in making decisions on attending college based on affordability and value.The tool, called College Scorecard, provides data on the costs of attending different colleges and universities, average graduation rates, student loan repayment rate, average amount of debt after graduation and employment status of recent alumni.

Museum returns artifacts to Italy after legal conflict

The University Art Museum returned six works of art to the country of Italy in December, ending a major decade-long international legal battle with the country over the ownership of the works. The transfer completed an agreement signed with Italy on June 2, 2011.In a January statement, the University claimed that they returned the artworks after an internal investigation into the ownership of certain items in the University’s collection.

Outbreak largest in 10 years

At least 190 students have come down with the highly-contagious gastroenteritis over the past two weeks, with 80 of the sick contracting the virus since Friday, University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said.The spread of gastroenteritis caused by norovirus is “particularly higher” when compared with previous years, Mbugua said.

Bridge Year adjusts capacity, locations

The University Bridge Year Program will nix its locations in Ghana and Serbia and offer new programs in Senegal and China instead beginning with the 2012-13 school year.The Bridge Year Program, which will continue to offer spaces in India and Peru, will also increase the total number of students the program can accommodate annually.

Georgetown Cupcake, the famous Washington, D.C.-based dessert seller featured on TLC’s DC Cupcakes and founded by Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne ’00, is coming to New York.Founded four years ago this month, LaMontagne’s cupcake store opened a third location in SoHo on Saturday, part of a new expansion that will bring the store to Boston by this spring. The popular television program, in its second season, features LaMontagne and her sister’s ventures in the dessert world.

Mackey wins Grammy

When University professors step into the limelight, it's usually not alongside Chris Brown and Taylor Swift.Composer Steven Mackey, the chair of the music department, took home a Grammy Award Sunday night in the category of Best Small Ensemble Performance for his recording “Lonely Motel: Music from Slide.” Mackey was also nominated for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Martinez ’12, Doenyas ’12 win $30,000 each for work with foster care, autistic children

Cristina Martinez ’12 and Ceymi Doenyas ’12 were awarded Princeton ReachOut Fellowships for public service projects, the sponsoring foundation announced on Jan. 27.Martinez received the foundation’s annual domestic fellowship for her plans to work with young adults transitioning out of foster care, and Doenyas received the international fellowship for her proposal to use technology to assist autistic students in her home country of Turkey.

Borough Council discusses UMCP zoning amendment

With the impending departure of the University Medical Center at Princeton to its new Plainsboro campus on Route 1, the Borough is faced with redeveloping the former hospital property, which consists of 9.8 acres in the heart of the town. The Borough Council met last night to discuss a zoning amendment to the site on Witherspoon Street, which would increase the number of proposed residential units from 280 homes to 324.
