Every Tuesday, Sports and Data writers analyze recent athletic competitions to provide analysis and insight on the happenings of Princeton athletics and individual players across the 38 intercollegiate teams at Princeton. Whether they are record-breaking or day-to-day, statistics deliver information in concise ways and help inform fans who might have missed the action. Read past By the Numbers coverage here.

Princeton Tigers: October 22–28

The Tigers played 17 games and matches across 12 sports and five U.S. states over the past seven days. Of the nine games where only one team came out on top, the Tigers won 67 percent of matches, surpassing last week’s 56 percent. Multiple-day meets and tournaments are counted individually for each day of the competition. Competitions with more than one event or individual results — such as golf and cross country — are not included in our win percentage analysis.

This week, the Tigers won two-thirds of their games. They took home half their games on the road and tied one. The Tigers held strong onto home field advantage, winning over 70 percent of games at Princeton.

Flurry of firsts

After combining to play over 5,800 career minutes, senior midfielder Sam Vigilante and junior midfielder Liam Beckwith each scored their first career goal for the men’s soccer team — less than ten minutes apart — in the Tiger’s 4–0 win at Yale. The two staples of the Tiger midfield have appeared in 50 and 47 games respectively. Beckwith has notched three assists as well this season.

Frenzied five

In their 6–1 stomping of Penn State this past Friday, No. 5 field hockey scored five goals from five different players in less than 13 minutes in the second half, including three in less than three minutes. Sophomore forward Pru Lindsay was at the heart of the action, assisting three of the five goals.

Second time for everything

Senior Fnu Nidunjianzan and junior Paul Inchauspé clinched spots in the NCAA Individual Men’s Tennis Championships for the second time in two years this weekend. Prior to Nidunjianzan and Inchauspé last year, two Tigers had not made NCAA Individuals since 1983. 32 years ago, Mike Bodden ’83 and Ted Farnsworth ’84 made the tournament, and Farnsworth made it to the Round of 16.

No. 5 men’s soccer’s season of defensive dominance continued in their shutout win on Saturday over Yale, a program record-tying 10th of the season. The 2001 Tigers recorded 10 shutouts over 18 games, while this year’s squad has two more regular season games as well as Ivy League and NCAA Tournament games left to play. Expect junior goalkeeper Andrew Samuels and the stellar back line to easily break the 24-year old record.

Chock full of block

Senior middle blocker Lucia Scalamandre has jumped up the women’s volleyball all-time blocks list this season. Scalamandre’s 60 blocks this season brings her up to 336 in her career, second all-time to Emily Brown ’01 and her 374 career blocks. Scalamandre, who averages 1.04 blocks per set on her career, would need to record blocks at a slightly higher pace than that to become first all-time. With six regular season matches and the postseason left, 375 is in sight.

From two long waits for a first goal to a stellar blocker to a goal outburst, the Tigers saw success this past week as Ivy Tournaments loom. Check back in next week to learn about all things Princeton Athletics — By The Numbers.
