1. Algorithms of Oppressions: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (Dec. 6th) at East Pyne 010 starts at 4:30 PM. Safiya Noble, a professor of communications at the University of Southern California, will discuss her work on data discrimination. The search engines that we use every day can be perpetuating racist practices against people of color, particularly women of color.
2. Ellipses Presents: Duets (Dec. 6th-8th) at the Wilson Blackbox is the slam poetry organization’s fall show. The theme “Duets” means that the audience will be in store for collaborative performances between poets as well as “dueting of found text and lyrics.”
3. diSiac 2.0 (Dec. 6th-7th) at the Berlind Theatre in McCarter celebrates the dance company’s 20th anniversary. Showcasing a mixture of hip hop and contemporary, diSiac 2.0 will also include pieces previously performed by alumni. Make sure to check out the beautifully shot promotional video for the event.
4. A Christmas Carol (opens Dec. 7th) at the Matthews Theater in McCarter is the perfect show for the Christmas season. Excited for the holidays? Counting down the days to break? This adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” (directed by Adam Immerwahr) will surely get you into the right spirit. If you are really itching to get into the Christmas mood, join the cast before the show for some caroling and crafts.
5. “Wizarding 101” exhibition (closes Jan. 4th) at the Costen Children’s Library in Firestone brings a little magic into our lives. The exhibition opened in October and will close right as we get back from winter break, so make sure to check it out as a quick breather during your study sessions. Hopefully, the magic will rub off on us and make the weeks until break go a little faster.
