The shooter, Stephen Pasceri, 55, was found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m., after which coworkers rushed Davidson to the emergency room, where he initially remained in critical condition, the Boston Globe reported. He died after several hours of surgery.

Pasceri had walked into the hospital on Tuesday morning and asked to talk to Davidson. When Davidson came to talk to him, he was allegedly shot twice by Pasceri.

A representative of the Boston Police Department's Bureau of Investigative Services said that Pasceri “had some issue” with Davidson. Pasceri's mother had been a patient of Davidson and had died under his care, Fox Boston reported.

Davidson's wife declined to comment on Tuesday night.

Brigham and Women's Hospital released a statement on Tuesday about Davidson's work there.

“Dr. Davidson was a wonderful and inspiring cardiac surgeon who devoted his career to saving lives and improving the quality of life of every patient he cared for,” the statement read in part. “It is truly devastating that his own life was taken in this horrible manner.”

Davidson graduated from the University with an A.B. in philosophy. He also graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1996 and did residencies at Duke University Medical Center and Brigham, as well as fellowships at Brigham, according to his biography on the Brigham website.
