SCORE falters as Class of 2014 selects fall courses

When Abby Klionsky ’14 tried to enroll in her fall semester classes on the University Registrar’s website SCORE at 7:30 a.m. this morning, a small hourglass popped up on the corner of the page. It kept spinning for the next 40 minutes, giving her no confirmation of her enrollment.

“I was getting nervous because I thought I was getting locked out of all my classes,” Klionsky said. “I went down to another computer, and it still didn’t work, so I thought there was a problem with my Internet connection.”

Klionsky, who is currently studying abroad in Prague, Czech Republic, said that she posted on Facebook about her delay with course enrollment and realized that students on campus were experiencing the same problem.

The SCORE system was scheduled to open for course registration this morning at 7:30 a.m. for the rising senior class.

University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua explained that PeopleSoft and SCORE, the systems that run course selection, were functioning well, but that the log-in was slow because there was an issue with the PU Access system.

“This morning, PU Access had configuration problems, which became evident when the entire junior class may have been trying to log in,” Mbugua said. “There was an upgrade in the system since the last course selection period, and so this is the first time that the problem was identified.”

Ga Hye Kim ’14 said that she didn’t have any problem with logging into the SCORE system, but she also experienced a delay when registering for her classes.

“I think I logged in 10 minutes beforehand,” Kim said. “I tried to click on [enrollment] right when it turned 7:30, but the hourglass kept on going.”

Despite the delay, both Klionsky and Kim were able to register for all the classes that they initially planned to take in the fall.

Mbugua said that there was about a 15-minute delay with PU Access, but that the problem was identified and fixed quickly.

“This problem has been fixed, and it is not expected to occur on Wednesday, during sophomore course selection,” Mbugua said.
