While the new BDSM group doesn’t sound particularly menacing, it is nonetheless ridiculous. Why celebrate hurting people and being hurt? We might just as well have a student group dedicated to playing “mercy,” or a penance club for any students who want to (safely) flagellate themselves. I suspect that people support BDSM precisely because in that context the desire to hurt and be hurt is sexual, and therefore taken to be sacrosanct. But this is a flawed logic: If we consider a preference to be perverse we should also reject it in the bedroom, be it a preference for bulimia, racism or whippings.
