Texas: Ted Cruz ‘92
After a come-from-behind victory in the Republican primary earlier this year, Tuesday may be Cruz’s easiest election so far. Cruz, a star of the Tea Party movement and a mentee of politics professor Robert George, is the heavy favorite in the Lone Star state. Look for him to be a major player in Tea Party politics in the Senate.
Stockton, Calif.: Ricky Gill ’09
Gill, 25, has raised more than $1.6 million for his race in California’s Central Valley but still faces a tall task: ousting three-term incumbent Rep. Jerry McNerney. Gill has had momentum in recent months though, according to analysts, and there’s no telling how much his massive war chest will pay off.
East Hampton, N.Y.: Randy Altschuler ’93
Altschuler’s rematch against Rep. Tim Bishop cannot be much closer than the 2010 battle, when Altschuler lost by a couple hundred votes. Recent polling suggests another close race.
Birmingham, Ala.: Terri Sewell ’86
In 2010, Sewell made history as Alabama’s first African-American congresswoman. Sewell, who represents the heavily Democratic and African-American area near Birmingham, should have no trouble continuing her congressional career on Tuesday.
Tacoma, Wash.: Derek Kilmer ’96
Kilmer, currently a state senator in Washington, won the Pyne Prize and studied at Oxford as a Marshall Scholar. Now he’s running for Congress and looks to be coasting to a win; the most recent poll puts him ahead by 15 points.
