News & Notes: Tilghman visits Harvard to talk science education

University President Shirley Tilghman visited Harvard Tuesday to deliver a speech about science education. Tilghman, a well-known molecular biologist before she was named president in 2001, argued that the curriculum needs to be integrated with larger scientific questions.

The Princeton president also questioned the effectiveness of online courses, saying larger class sizes make it difficult for professors to engage students. The University is currently offering some courses through the online course platform Coursera.

Tilghman was introduced by Harvard President Drew Faust, who Tilghman has praised. Tilghman was on an early list for the job that eventually went to Faust in 2007.
