Election 2012 Live Blog: Four more years for Barack Obama as president, Michelle Obama '85 as first lady

12:17 a.m. — Four more years for Obama ’85 as first lady

Barack Obama won reelection as President of the United States shortly after 11 p.m., television networks projected, granting him and first lady Michelle Obama ’85 another four years in the White House.

Some confusion remained shortly after midnight over whether Obama had actually won Ohio, while Florida and Virginia remained tight. But The New York Times, Politico and CNN all maintained their projections that Obama would come out victorious.

The victory gave Michelle Obama four more years worth of chances to visit her alma mater as first lady. At a fundraiser held in Princeton Township in September, she promised to return to campus, saying, “I’m going to make that happen.” Last month, The Daily Princetonian reported that the first lady had rejected numerous invitations from the University to return to campus.

11:48 p.m. — Altschuler '93 locked in another tight race; defeat looms

Randy Altschuler '93, who lost by less than 1,000 votes in his race against Democratic congressman Tim Bishop in 2010, looks like he will lose again to Bishop by another tight margin. With just 3 percent of precincts remaining, Altschuler trails Bishop 48 percent to 52 percent.

Altschuler has not yet conceded, though. In 2010, he took a while to concede as well in the nation's last undecided congressional race.

11:34 p.m. — Republican holds State Assembly seat

Incumbent Republican Donna Simon is projected to win reelection to represent New Jersey’s district 17, which includes the University, in the State Assembly.

She leads Democratic challenger Marie Corfield with 61 percent of the vote with 47 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Princeton Patch.

Corfield, a former elementary school art teacher, has failed to gain popularity after criticizing Gov. Chris Christie’s cuts in education spending. Simon has advocated for state tax cuts and a reduction in red tape.

We’ve got a couple other expected wins to report out: Rush Holt, the Democrat who represents the area that includes the University, and Republican Leonard Lance GS ’82, who represents the counties north of Princeton, are headed back to the House.

Joining Holt and Lance in the 113th Congress will be Colorado Democratic congressman Jared Polis ’96, who won a third term tonight, according to the Denver Post. Polis represents the Boulder area.
