William Sword ’76, a Township resident and managing director of the investment bank William Sword & Co. on Chambers Street, died Monday night after a tree fell on him while he was cleaning debris from Hurricane Sandy at his home, Township police said this afternoon. Sword was 61.
Rescuers responded to Sword's home at 1036 Great Road at around 8:30 p.m. Great Road had been blocked earlier in the day because of fallen trees and was still blocked at the time of the incident, according to Borough Police Captain Nick Sutter. This closure made it difficult for emergency help to reach the house.
Sutter said the joint Borough-Township emergency operations center coordinated the rescue-crew response. Township police and the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad responded to the scene, and emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures. Sword was pronounced dead at the scene.
Frank Setnicky, director of PFARS, said they responded to the call but deferred any further comment to the police.
Sword had been the victim of a stabbing incident at his home in 2003. Sword was stabbed several times by Jelani Manigault, a University of Maryland senior who had stolen his parents’ car in Princeton. Manigault crashed the car into a tree in front of Sword’s house. When Sword offered to assist him, Manigault ran inside the house, grabbed a knife and stabbed Sword. Township police shot and killed Manigault at the scene.
While at the University, Sword majored in politics and was a member of Ivy Club. As an alumnus, he remained an active member of his eating club and was treasurer of Ivy’s grad board.
