A partnership between Suburban Transit and Megabus, branches of Coach USA, will begin running routes today. One-way fares range from $1 to $14, depending on how far in advance the customers book their tickets online.
The round-trip express service runs from in front of the FitzRandolph Gates at the intersection of Witherspoon Street and Nassau Street in Princeton to Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. The bus makes a stop in New Brunswick.
Megabus Vice President of Operations Bryony Chamberlain said that the partnership with Suburban Transit “gives additional benefits in lower fares.” According to Chamberlain, Megabus already has a significant base of student customers and can provide lower fares because it adjusts them relative to competitors. Megabus also offers free Wi-Fi and power outlets, Chamberlain added.
Since 1865, the train at Princeton Station has been the main option for the University’s mass transportation needs. Yet the Dinky does not carry passengers directly to New York. Instead, the Dinky deposits them at Princeton Junction Station where they wait to take a connecting train in order to arrive at Penn Station.
Despite the need for a connection, Stephanie Rigizadeh ’15 said that she likes having the Dinky on campus.
“We’re lucky to have that. I wish we could go straight to New York from the Dinky, but other than that, it’s pretty nice to have,” she said.
New Jersey Transit’s spokesperson John Durso, Jr. declined to comment about whether Megabus might be potential competition for the company.
Farrah Bui ’14 said she thinks the advent of the Megabus line from Princeton to New York will be both “environmentally and economically feasible.” Bui also noted that the price of a train ticket is “one of the biggest complaints” from students. A round trip train ticket from Princeton Station to Penn Station currently costs $33 for adults.
While Chamberlain said she recognizes that though Megabus offers “limited availability at traditional commuting times,” their cheaper fares may encourage “some commuters [to] change their habits.”
Departures from Princeton to New York begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until 10:00 p.m. The length of transit ranges between one hour and 30 minutes and one hour and 45 minutes, depending on the time of departure.
