News & Notes: Majority of Americans approve of college’s effects

The poll found that 26 percent of respondents thought that college has a negative impact, while the remaining 13 percent of people polled did not respond.

An analysis of the numbers revealed that they split along partisan lines, as 67 percent of Democrats approved of the effect college has while 51 percent of Republicans did.

Thirty-eight percent of Tea Party Republicans thought college has a positive effect.

The percentage of Americans who approve of the role college plays in American life is comparatively higher than approval ratings of other institutions.

Pew found that 57 percent of Americans approve of the impact of churches, 26 percent approve of the media’s impact and 15 percent approve of the effects of Congress.

 A 2011 Pew Research Center survey found that a high percentage of college graduates, regardless of political ideology, found college a worthwhile investment.
