Payne announced his illness last month. Despite his intention to fight the disease, Payne was transported back to New Jersey from Washington, D.C., on Friday.
Representative Rush Holt, a Democrat who represents Princeton Borough and Princeton Township, called Payne a “good friend” in a statement and noted his work in Congress on education, U.S.-Africa policy and workers’ safety.
Payne was the ranking Democrat on the House’s Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights. In April 2009, while on a trip to Somalia, Somali attackers fired on the airport from which his airplane was departing for Kenya. Payne was unhurt.
Holt also noted that Payne brought international attention to the violence in Darfur.
The first African American elected to Congress from New Jersey, Payne was a former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. He also served as the president of the National Council of YMCAs.
Governor Chris Christie will choose a date for a special election to fill Payne’s seat.
