News & Notes: Professor Appiah given humanities medal

Appiah, one of eight winners of the award, was recognized for “seeking eternal truths in the contemporary world” and for his “books and essays within and beyond his academic discipline [that] have shed moral and intellectual light on the individual in an era of globalization and evolving group identities.”

Appiah’s work has centered on African and African-American literary and cultural studies. He has questioned the modern concept of race, though he now sees race as a form of social identity, according to his biography on the National Endowment for the Humanities website.

Appiah came to the University in January 2002 from Harvard University and was joined in the move by his colleague Cornel West later that year. The pair then notably attempted and failed to convince Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates to join them at the University.

Robert Darnton, a librarian and scholar of European history at the University for nearly 40 years, also won the award. Darnton left the University for Harvard in 2007.
