News & Notes: Princeton MSA responds to alleged NYPD surveillance at other Ivies

According to the News, detectives surveyed websites, forums and blogs of these organizations and prepared reports for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly including names of students and professors.

No students were charged with a crime as a result of the investigations, but members of the Yale Muslim Students Association were upset at what they perceived as a violation of their civil rights.

Jihad Al-Jabban ’14, president of Princeton’s Muslim Students Association, said that as far as he knew the University chapter was never under investigation but was nonetheless outraged at the NYPD’s actions.

“We fear that such actions can lead to the alienation of Muslim-American youth and may cause the return of unethical practice toward minority rights in this country,” Al-Jabban said in a statement. “The NYPD must be held responsible for violating the trust of its American citizens.”

Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this article misstated the title of Jihad Al-Jabban '14. Al-Jabban is the president of the Muslim Students Association. The 'Prince' regrets the error.
