The meeting will be the fourth in a series of heated debates over the historical status of the location of IAS, the former home institution of Albert Einstein. The 21-acre Institute is located next to Battlefield State Park, which commemorates George Washington’s major 1777 victory over the British in the Battle of Princeton.
The Institute plans to build 15 faculty-housing units, a move that some scholars oppose due to the historical significance of the land and the variety of archaeological artifacts that have been found there.
The current compromise, which the IAS has accepted, is to build on seven acres and preserve 14. The Institute would also leave 200 feet of space between its project and the park. The meeting tonight may be followed immediately by a vote, but opponents of the proposal have said they will continue to fight regardless of the outcome.
