An advisory board and then a group of 250 students will test the email service in the coming weeks. Incoming students will be given a Gmail account in May, and current students will be able to switch to the new email system this summer.
According to the Official Google Enterprise Blog, 62 of the nation’s top 100 colleges use Google Apps for Education, which produces Gmail, including Harvard, Yale and Brown. Stanford signed a contract in January to replace its email service with Gmail, according to The Stanford Daily.
The USG and Princeton’s Office of Information Technology are currently piloting Gmail as a potential email service to replace WebMail. Other students participating in the pilot program are testing Microsoft Office 365. The pilot program is expected to be completed by early March, and a recommendation is expected to be offered by April.
