The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights originally folded the August complaint against the University into an existing compliance review that began in 2008. An Education Department spokesperson told Bloomberg News that the new complaint “will no longer be considered as part of OCR’s existing compliance review involving Princeton.” The original investigation remains ongoing.
The original complaint was filed in 2006 by Jian Li, who was then a freshman at Yale. Li claimed that the admissions procedures favored special groups at the expense of Asian-Americans.
The 2011 complaint was filed after an Indian-American student from California who graduated at the top of his high school class was rejected by the University and Harvard. A Harvard spokesperson told the Harvard Crimson that the University was “pleased” that the complaint had been withdrawn.
