McCosh to divert patients to hospital

In the midst of a campus-wide gastroenteritis outbreak, McCosh Health Center is diverting patients to the University Medical Center at Princeton due to a lack of available beds at McCosh, the Department of Public Safety confirmed late Thursday night.

"All the beds are full" at McCosh, said Public Safety Sgt. Rob Adams, adding that students requiring transport are being taken to UMCP until further notice.

University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said in an email early this morning that "because of the unusually high number of students with symptoms of gastroenteritis who are being seen at the McCosh Health Center, other students who need medical assistance may be directed to the local hospital due to a variety of factors, including the level of medical care that the student requires."

The health center has been faced with an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by norovirus in recent weeks. As of Tuesday, at least 190 students had become ill with the virus.

Mbugua said earlier this week that McCosh was prepared to handle the outbreak. The health center “has adjusted its process and staffing levels to handle the increase in demand at the present level,” Mbugua said.

Mbugua added today that even without "unusually high demand for the University's health services," students are transported to the hospital at the discretion of McCosh or Public Safety personnel.

He also noted that the University will continue to monitor the situation.
