Through its Recreational Trails Program, the FHA gave $1.28 million in grants to New Jersey municipalities and parks for the maintenance and development of a statewide network of trails.
The D&R Canal State Park — located on the other side of Carnegie Lake from campus and commonly known as the tow path — directly received $22,000 to purchase a utility vehicle.
Additionally, Princeton Township received $24,700 to maintain the Quaker Road Pathway, a trail located about three miles southwest of the main campus, down Mercer Road from the Princeton Battlefield State Park.
Hopewell and Lawrence Townships each received $24,700 to maintain their respective sections of the Lawrence-Hopewell Trail, a 20-mile loop open for bicyclists and pedestrians that passes through Lawrenceville. Pennington also received $24,700 for a connection to the trail.
The New Jersey Trails Council recommended these three trails, as well as the rest of the 49 grant recipients, in 2011. They were all subsequently approved by the FHA.
“The quality of life for New Jersey residents is enhanced by the wide and varying network of rural, suburban and urban trails, which connects the fabric of our communities across the state,’’ Martin said.
