“Mergers are too rare on both sides of the Delaware River,” the editorial argues, and cites the potential for saving money and the convenience of a consolidated neighborhood as reasons for extending the consolidation program.
Mergers such as Princeton’s are being supported by the state government, as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and the state legislature are contributing 20 percent of the $1.7 million cost to consolidate the Princetons.
Other New Jersey towns are considering consolidation, or at least merging services, according to the editorial. Camden and Gloucester counties already provide a regional emergency dispatch service, and the administration of Camden has shown interest in merging police services with nearby towns.
The editorial added that a loss of town identity is a significant factor discouraging towns from consolidation.
