The bank, which has a branch on Nassau Street and is patronized by many students, announced two weeks ago that it would begin testing a new fee system at the beginning of next year. Other banks including Chase and Wells Fargo announced similar policies. However, following public outcry and Chase’s and Wells Fargo’s cancellations of their fee programs, Bank of America dropped the planned fee.
The bank listened “to [its] customers very closely,” in deciding to reverse the policy, said David Darnell, co-chief operating officer of the bank, in a statement following the announcement.
Prior to the reversal, executives from Bank of America defended the fee, saying that it would encourage customers to use additional bank services that would exempt them from the fee.
