In an email to Whitman College’s Class of 2014 at the beginning of the year, Whitman master Sandra Bermann described several changes in the college office that happened over the summer. These included Bermann’s new appointment as master of the college — replacing economics professor Harvey Rosen — and Christina Davis’ replacement as Director of Student Life with Devon Wessman-Smerdon ’05.
But two months into the school year, the position of Director of Studies — previously held by Dr. Marisa Huerta — is still unfilled. Huerta left her position this August. Since then, the Whitman staff have been conducting a national search and inviting candidates to interview with them.
According to a posting on the jobs section of the University website, the director of studies “has responsibility for the oversight of academic advising and the implementation of academic regulations for the freshmen and sophomores resident in the college, and for the juniors and seniors, both resident and non-resident, who are affiliated with the college.”
The posting also noted that the position was available “immediately.”
“In the meantime, to ensure that student advising and student programming continue seamlessly, Leanne Wood, Ph.D., a former Whitman resident graduate student and current lecturer in the Princeton Writing Program, is serving as our special adviser for freshmen,” Dean of the College Rebecca Graves-Bayazitoglu said in an email.
Graves-Bayazitoglu noted that Whitman has “remained committed to providing the same level of support to students.”
She added that once the search process is complete, the college will welcome the new director while engaging in several new initiatives.
“We’ve started collaborating with Rockefeller College and Forbes College on a pilot program to involve the peer advisers more actively in college life,” she added.
In addition, Whitman will partner with McCarter Theatre to offer some “preview discussions” with casts and directors of this year’s theatrical productions.
