Students win Chinese speech contest

The contest, held in the Rose Conference Hall on Park Avenue in New York City, rewarded students for proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. It was open to students in the greater New York area whose first language was not Chinese.

Fifteen students were invited to the final round, which involved a five-minute prepared speech and a two-minute impromptu Q-and-A session, all in Mandarin.

Director of New York’s Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Anita Chan, the organizer of the event, emphasized the importance of an increased understanding between the United States and Hong Kong, as well as between Hong Kong and mainland China.

“With the closer economic integration between Hong Kong and China, the use of Mandarin in Hong Kong has become much more common in recent years,” she said.

Chan added that Hong Kong encourages its students to learn English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

The Hong Kong Cup competition was organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York.
